Щодо функцій у реченні, тут герундій майже повністю збігається з інфінітивом, виконуючи ті самі функції.

А саме, герундій у реченні може виконувати функції:

1. Підмета (Subject)

   Skating is my hobby. (skating - підмет)
2. Предикативу (Predicative)

   Тобто іменна частина складеного іменного присудка, лише частиною, а не самим присудком.

   My hobby is skating. (My hobby – підмет, is skating -присудок)
3. Частини складеного дієслівного присудка (Part of the compound verbal predicate)

   Після дієслів, що позначають початок або продовження процесу.

   I started skating in childhood. (I – підмет, started (дієслово, що позначає початок) skating - присудок)
4. Додатоку (Object)

   I like skating. (I – підмет, like – присудок; I like – what? – skating - додаток)
5. Означення (Attribute)

   My hobby of skating is very important for me. (My hobby – підмет, - what hobby? – of skating - присудок)
6. Обставини часу, мети або наслідку (Adverbial modifier)

   I always go to shower after skating. (I always go to shower – after what? Why? – after skating)
